When Love Hurts: Navigating Relationship Difficulties with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Intimate, sexual, and romantic relationships can bring joy and heartache and everything in between. In this workshop, we’ll focus on the more difficult aspects of love and explore how ACT can help people navigate them. Further, because relationships need not be monogamous, we’ll discuss other forms of relationships (e.g., polyamory) and their unique challenges for partners and therapists.
Learning Objectives
Best practices for assessing relationship diversity at intake and throughout treatment (including affirming language and mindful approaches to establishing how relationships can develop or change over time
Acceptance strategies for common difficult emotions as experienced by patients and providers (including treatment techniques for addressing disclosure, concerns with fidelity, respect, and commitment)
Identifying the impact of differentiating between opinions and values in loving relationships
Explain the unique benefits of exploring discomfort in love relationships
About the Presenters
Dr. Jonathan Kaplan works as a clinical psychologist and serves as the Director of the SoHo CBT + Mindfulness Center. For over 20 years, he has conducted professional trainings on ACT, couples therapy, mindfulness, and diversity issues. He is the co-author of ACT and RFT in Relationships: Helping Client Deepen Intimacy and Maintaining Healthy Commitments using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Relational Frame Theory.
Dr. David Jeffries is a NY-state licensed clinical psychologist. He provides evidence-based treatment to adult individuals and couples at the SoHo CBT + Mindfulness Center. Hi clinical interests include perfectionism, social anxiety, depression, and psychological well-being for LGBTQ+l and BIPOC communities.
